Seeing Jesus in Psalm 132

Psalm 132 Here I will increase the power of David; my anointed one will be a light for my people . Psalm 132:17 “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “ I am the light of the world . Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”” John 8:12 Jesus is the Son of David. At least 14 times the New Testament uses the phrase “Son of David” to refer to Jesus. And Matthew tells us that Jesus fulfilled a prophecy of Isaiah of being a light to the people, which is also here in Psalm 132. So Jesus is, according to the New Testament writers, both the son of David and the light for the people ( John 1:4-9 , 3:19 , 9:5 , 12:36 , Luke 2:32 , Acts 26:23 , Matthew 17:2 ). And as I already wrote about in Psalm 122, I suggest we can even see the city of Jerusalem as pointing to Jesus. And it seems obvious to anyone who has read about Jesus, that we see Him as the king of Israel; He was even crucified with that title ( Revelation 19:13-16 , John 18:36 , Isaiah 9:6–7 , E...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 118

Psalm 118 Sometimes a big event overshadows something else very significant happening around the same time. Since I set out on this journey to handwrite a copy of every Psalm and then write a “Bible lesson” for each one everyday for 150 days, I always get asked the same question. “What are you going to do when you get to Psalm 119?” My friends were so concerned that they organised a crew of helpers to join in the task of rewriting the Psalm. More on that after this Psalm. I realised after 70 some days that I needed to have a rest day in the week and that writing 7 days a week wasn’t the best idea. But I was still determined to finish the project by the end of the year, so I made the plan with Lyssa to rest on Sunday and write two Psalms on Monday (which is my weekend day since the store is open on Saturday and closed on Sunday and Monday). But after reordering the Psalms I noticed that would put Psalm 119 on a Monday and actually couple it with Psalm 118. With all the concentration on ...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 89

Psalm 89 How can this be anyone but Jesus? Really folks, did you read it? There is a dilemma in Psalm 89. On one hand it speaks often of forever and in such sure and stable terms you think this is unshakeable and unbreakable and then wallop it is all a mess and 180° turned around. For our puny minds is this a problem but for an eternal God with an eternal Son who becomes a God/Man, it is no problem at all. And here we can see the power of the hypostatic union at work. All at once Jesus is perfect and eternal and also bearer of sin and shame. Isn’t it great? I think people probably gave up pondering how this could all work out and choose to ignore the inconsistencies.  I want to take you into a realm you may not have spent much time thinking about. Light. What is light? Is it something tangible or is it  energy in movement and intangible? Scientists discuss it by asking is it a particle or a wave? Well it is both.  Around the year 1900 it was understood that light ...
