Seeing Jesus in Psalm 69

Psalm 69 MAIN POINT: A sinless Jesus suffered all the pain of sin for me (and you) while He lived and hung on the cross. Need I remind you that I am looking for Jesus Christ in the Psalms? So it is obvious that through the ages Psalm 69 is considered a Messianic Psalm because of Matthew’s inclusion of the detail of Jesus twice being offered sour wine. “But instead, they give me poison for food; they offer me sour wine for my thirst.”  Psalm 69:21 NLT  “ The soldiers gave him wine mixed with bitter gall, but when he had tasted it, he refused to drink it”. ... “One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink.”  Matthew 27:34, 48 NLT Many who comment on this Psalm say that only some parts of it apply to Christ because when David talks about being a sinner, that obviously can not apply to Jesus who was perfect and did not sin. I want to consider what Jesus did on the cross.  Jesus suffered humiliation. Dav...

Seeing Jesus in Psalms 71

Psalm 71 “You have allowed me to suffer much hardship, but you will restore me to life again and lift me up from the depths of the earth.” Psalm 71:20 NLT  Each time I read the Psalms I am asking myself which of these words could have come from the mouth of Jesus during His life on earth? And apart from the verse above which I will discuss in a bit, I want to say that I need to revise my thoughts about Jesus. I in no way want to imagine that David was a better worshipper than Jesus. David was not more full of praise, not more excited to talk about God and not more full of joy about God’s salvation.  How could anyone moreso than Jesus truthfully utter these words found in verses 5-6? “O Lord, you alone are my hope. I’ve trusted you, O Lord, from childhood. Yes, you have been with me from birth; from my mother’s womb you have cared for me. No wonder I am always praising you!” Psalm 71:5-6 And could David be more an example than Jesus?  ”My life is an example to man...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 39

Psalm 39 I ask myself today, have I really thought about the brevity of Jesus' life? David is talking about a short life even as James, the brother of Jesus, speaks about life being as a vapour (James 4:14). But by all standards and times, Jesus had a brief life and a short ministry here on earth. David lived about 70 years long and he was made King over Judah when he was 30 years old (2 Samuel 5:4). David was king over Israel and Judah for about 33 years. There are many parallels between David the King and Jesus, the Son of David. Brevity of life and ministry/reign isn't one of them. Jesus lived 33 years before His death on the cross and reigns eternally. But both the second king of Judah (Israel) and Eternal King of God's Kingdom suffered. Suffering seems to go with reigning. And kingly aspirations seem to always reveal not enough time to get everything accomplished that a king would like to do for his kingdom. David planned to build a temple for God (2 Samuel 7:1-1, 1 ...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 22

My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help? Psalm 22:1 NLT   Psalm 22 We have a phrase in English, “All’s well that ends well.” But you could contrast that with the saying, “The ends don’t justify the means.”  Do you understand the conflict between these two snippets of common sense wisdom? " The whole earth will acknowledge the Lord and return to him. All the families of the nations will bow down before him." Psalm 22:27 Surely, we want to end up at verse 27 but oh what a desperately difficult path David has to walk to get there.  In verses 1, 11 and 19 David expresses fear that God is not near. v.1 Why are you so far away  v.11 Do not stay so far from me, v.19 O Lord, do not stay far away! There are about 1000 years between David and Jesus. And the Davidic literature was well known to all Jews during Jesus’ time. And yet so many details of what David writes in Psalm 22 happened at the crucifixion of Jesus. v.6 But I am...
