Seeing Jesus in Psalm 19

The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship.

Psalm 19:1 NLT

 Psalm 19

God knows your struggle! God’s word reveals, even to you, your thoughts and motives.

MAIN POINT: God’s word offers you a way of rescue from the slavery to your sin.

As I said yesterday this Psalm (19) of David was greatly instrumental in protecting my heart and guiding me to become free of the deadly quicksand of sin. Even at a young age I was very aware of my lusts, lies and pride. I hated it. And yet I gave it all the time and attention it desired. My sin owned me and I knew I was a slave. I desperately wanted to be clean. When I read the words in Psalm 19 I knew David understood my situation and I knew too he knew something that could help me. I didn’t understand fully (I am sure I still don’t) but I could tell there was hope. I wanted to be free just like David prayed in verse 13. I knew I was full of hidden sin just like it said in verse 12 and I was acutely aware that I was a slave to my sin. So I used David’s words over and over hoping God would hear and rescue me. He is doing just that and has done it and I’m sure will keep doing it.

  1. God is telling you all about himself (Knowing about God is the first step in becoming free)

v.1,2,3,6 God has witnesses to His glory and they are communicating to everyone all the time how great God is. (Don’t underestimate to power of this statement)

Like the title of a small yet deeply profound book by Francis A. Schaeffer, He Is There and He Is Not Silent

God’s voice can be heard in every breath you take, in every heartbeat, in every thought, in everything you could see, in all light and even in the darkness. You can’t see, hear, think or experience something that doesn’t speak for God to you.

Day & Night God never ceases to communicate His glory to you and wow is it attractive. v.4

God is excited (as are His messengers) to tell you all about himself. v.5

  1. God is telling you about himself through His word.

God wants to make sure you know about him. v.6

God wants you to know: His ways. His words. That He is desirable.

  1. The word of God: (What is true of God’s word is true of God)

Is perfect v.7 (like a beautiful painting, like a newborn baby, like a flower)

Revives the soul v.7 (like a drink of water on a hot day, like a good meal)

Is public information v.7 (it is global, priority required news, actionable)

Is absolutely reliable v.7 (comprehensive, complete, indepth, never fails)

Is transformative v.7 (You'll never be the same after having heard it)

Is practical v.8 (You know exactly what steps to take to respond rightly.)

Is right v.8 (as in just, satisfying, argument winning, not having to argue)

Is joy giving v.8 (uplifting, hunger satisfying, happy making)

Is clear v.8 (able to be understood)

Is insight giving for practical living v.8 (You’ll know what to do)

Is awesome, pure, and eternal v.9 (Better than you expect or could imagine.)

(There is so much more that could be said and drawn out of this passage, go discovering, start mining the gemstones, taste and see.)

  1. God gives a promise of escape from sin’s clutches.

Focus on God first, not your sin, not your needs, not you. Focus on God.

When you look at God you will grow to forget yourself and will find God captivating.

God knows everything there is to know about you and your sin and sin potential.

Your potential to reflect God's character is far greater and can last forever.

Conclusion:

You may be so down and so focused on your failure and your slavery to sin and the damage you have done to you and to others that you would miss God. You would miss His ability to fully restore you and everything sin has destroyed. Do not underestimate the transforming power of God's word and its eternal ability to captivate your heart and mind with everything God.

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 2

<-- Psalm 1   Psalm 3 --> Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed. Psalm 2:12 NLT Psalm 2   (Handwritten Psalms 2) Main Point: Jesus is the heavenly anointed King over all the earth who provides refuge from God’s wrath and the injustice of the raging nations.   God has installed a King (who is Jesus) who rules with heaven’s authority. v. 6  God’s King is in relationship with God. vv. 6 -7   God installs His King on His Holy place (mountain)  God calls His King, His Son.  God gives everything to His King and offers all He could ask for.  God gives His King heavenly authority over all the other rulers of the earth.  God’s King is a refuge against injustice and righteous judgement.  God recognises the rebellion of the earthly kings as a personal assault and will meet it with wrath. v.1,2,3  God gives the nations and rulers fair warning of his King’s authority. v.4,3, 9-12  God’s King i...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 32

I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8 NLT   Psalm 32 Have you ever heard the voice of God? People want God to speak to them, until He does. As you probably know, Lyssa and I help Christians in Belgium by serving in the Christian bookstore/coffee shop, Het Goede Boek in Leuven. Sometimes people want a red letter edition of the Bible. Other times we are asked for a Dutch language version of the King James Bible. I think both requests come from the same desire. People want to really know what God says. Today in reading and longhand copying the Bible from Psalm 32, I too got a bit excited and I thought I knew what to share about God from Psalm 32 because of a particular translation choice. When I checked my observation with several other translations in three languages, I found  a big difference.  v.8 “Le Seigneur dit : Je t'enseignerai” (NFC), “De Heer zegt: "Ik leer je” (BB), “The Lord says, “I will guide you...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 1

Psalm 2 --> But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. Psalm 1:2 NLT Psalm 1 ( Hand Written Text of Psalm 1 )  Main Point:  The law of the Lord constantly produces fruit because it is the priority and passion of the godly.   God’s law is the priority for the godly. v.1   God’s law is the passion of the godly. v.2   God’s law is fruitful in the godly. v.3   We can see the law of the Lord as pointing to the rule and reign of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the ultimate law giver of God and He rules through His Word. And His Word is from God the Father. Jesus tells us that apart from Him we can do nothing and that He is the fruit-bearing vine. The life-giving, fruit-bearing Word of God is the ultimate Law of the Lord. And Jesus told us the summation of that whole law is love for God.  So of course if we love God we will want to be with Him rather than with others; we will raise His opinions, plans and prioriti...
