Seeing Jesus in Psalm 27

Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.

Psalm 27:10 NLT

 Psalm 27

The feelings of insecurity are not sin. Such fears lead us to need God more. These inevitable niggling doubts cause us to consider the character of God. Although David knows who God is, he still faces significant struggles and obstacles in his life, and these even erode the confidence He has in God. His faith is tested so he explores his priorities and his allegiances and concludes that when all is said and done, he has only one desire. And that is to be in the presence of God where he will meditate on the character of God. No other relationship, not even his parents, is as important to him.

Mark 3: 20-21,31-35

20 One time Jesus entered a house, and the crowds began to gather again. Soon he and his disciples couldn’t even find time to eat. 21 When his family heard what was happening, they tried to take him away. “He’s out of his mind,” they said. 31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him. They stood outside and sent word for him to come out and talk with them. 32 There was a crowd sitting around Jesus, and someone said, “Your mother and your brothers are outside asking for you.”

33 Jesus replied, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 34 Then he looked at those around him and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. 35 Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

There is much speculation as to the family of Jesus, especially since there is no mention of Joseph, Jesus’ step-father, in his adult life. Then there is this curious cause for question in this scene above with Jesus.

Do I need to tell you about the family of David, his relationship with his parents and brothers and then later his relationships with his wives and sons? No matter what you have experienced in life, I can guarantee you David also knew that sort of craziness. No wonder David sounds so insecure, particularly in this Psalm.

But like Joseph, the famous son of Jacob, many many generations before, speaking to his brothers after the death of their father, Jacob, David, Jesus, and Joseph knew that God’s house was the place to make your priority and the place to get security.

Main Point: Regardless of our family's crazy, being at home in God’s presence has to be your priority.

  1. Feelings of insecurity, especially from family conflict, are inevitable.

    1. David has good reasons for family and national insecurity.

    2. Others in the Bible also show a reason for only relying on God.

    3. Even perfect Jesus knew family and hometown insecurities.

  2. God uses such situations to make us long for the peace of His presence.

    1. When we run out of options, we only have God.

    2. When life raises questions, we can compare our reality to the presence of God.

    3. We are often invited or feel forced to reconsider our allegiances and priorities. (Thank God, it's a good thing)

  3. God is worthy of our confidence (I’m just going through the psalm verse for verse, I invite you to write the verse numbers by the following (re-)statements.

When I say God I mean Jesus, but I also know that Jesus was a man on the David side of the equation. See, David is the king and authority, and still he is vulnerable and needy, looking above himself, just as Jesus who looks to the Father.

  • God is light.

  • God saves us.

  • God backs us up. (He's on our side)

  • God is strong, secure and unwavering.

  • God is a defender.

  • God takes our side.

  • God gives us a confidence boost.

  • God rescues us.

  • Being with God is joyful. v.6

  • We feel welcome and respond willingly to the call of God.

  • We can express our emotions and fears to God.

  • God will show us the right way.

  • God knows the truth.

  • God is eternal and lives even beyond death.

  • Don’t give up on God.

Conclusion: God is where you want to be, so don’t despise your family, because God has given them to you to help you see that He is better and you can count on Him.

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 2

<-- Psalm 1   Psalm 3 --> Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed. Psalm 2:12 NLT Psalm 2   (Handwritten Psalms 2) Main Point: Jesus is the heavenly anointed King over all the earth who provides refuge from God’s wrath and the injustice of the raging nations.   God has installed a King (who is Jesus) who rules with heaven’s authority. v. 6  God’s King is in relationship with God. vv. 6 -7   God installs His King on His Holy place (mountain)  God calls His King, His Son.  God gives everything to His King and offers all He could ask for.  God gives His King heavenly authority over all the other rulers of the earth.  God’s King is a refuge against injustice and righteous judgement.  God recognises the rebellion of the earthly kings as a personal assault and will meet it with wrath. v.1,2,3  God gives the nations and rulers fair warning of his King’s authority. v.4,3, 9-12  God’s King i...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 32

I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8 NLT   Psalm 32 Have you ever heard the voice of God? People want God to speak to them, until He does. As you probably know, Lyssa and I help Christians in Belgium by serving in the Christian bookstore/coffee shop, Het Goede Boek in Leuven. Sometimes people want a red letter edition of the Bible. Other times we are asked for a Dutch language version of the King James Bible. I think both requests come from the same desire. People want to really know what God says. Today in reading and longhand copying the Bible from Psalm 32, I too got a bit excited and I thought I knew what to share about God from Psalm 32 because of a particular translation choice. When I checked my observation with several other translations in three languages, I found  a big difference.  v.8 “Le Seigneur dit : Je t'enseignerai” (NFC), “De Heer zegt: "Ik leer je” (BB), “The Lord says, “I will guide you...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 1

Psalm 2 --> But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. Psalm 1:2 NLT Psalm 1 ( Hand Written Text of Psalm 1 )  Main Point:  The law of the Lord constantly produces fruit because it is the priority and passion of the godly.   God’s law is the priority for the godly. v.1   God’s law is the passion of the godly. v.2   God’s law is fruitful in the godly. v.3   We can see the law of the Lord as pointing to the rule and reign of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the ultimate law giver of God and He rules through His Word. And His Word is from God the Father. Jesus tells us that apart from Him we can do nothing and that He is the fruit-bearing vine. The life-giving, fruit-bearing Word of God is the ultimate Law of the Lord. And Jesus told us the summation of that whole law is love for God.  So of course if we love God we will want to be with Him rather than with others; we will raise His opinions, plans and prioriti...
