If a person does not repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow.

Jesus is known as the perfect God Man. Jesus is the eternal 2nd person of the trinity who exists outside time; yet Jesus is the man born of Mary, conceived of the Holy Spirit, died on the cross and rose from the dead and is seated on the right hand of the Father. Jesus fulfils many roles.
Jesus is the second Adam (Romans 5), the son of David, Jesus is prophet, priest and king. Jesus is the liberating leader who brings His people out of slavery--a better Moses….
But on the cross Jesus is also the condemned; in bearing our sins and being judged and forsaken by the Father, Jesus is also the worst of sinners, he has taken the place of the wicked and suffered as their representative.
So as we look at this Psalm we can see Jesus in these differing roles.
When David claims to be righteous and innocent, David must know in fact He could not stand before the righteous God.
I’ve always found it interesting that Job and David both invite God to have a poke around and see if they have done anything wrong and if they had, then to judge them accordingly. I dare not be so bold. But I see Jesus both as the judge and the judged in verse 8 of Psalm 7.
So if David is under God’s protection and God is making David righteous, then God can declare him righteous.
Once again the satisfaction of balance of justice is not to be found in one person being better than another but in one person appealing to God and trusting God to make him righteous.
The key is in verse 12, “If a man does not repent”.
MAIN POINT: God declares and makes righteous the person who repents and trusts God. But if a person does not repent, God is a fierce judge.
God can save. vv.1-2 so the repentant runs to God.
God can make him above reproach. vv.3-5 so the repentant trusts in the ability of God
God judges justly. vv.6-11 so the repentant trusts in God.
God’s justice is sure. vv.12-16 so the repentant knows He must repent.
God’s justice is worthy of praise, so the repentant responds in a thankful song. v.17
Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end, and may you establish the righteous— you who test the minds and hearts, O righteous God! If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword; he has bent and readied his bow; he has prepared for him his deadly weapons, making his arrows fiery shafts.
