Seeing Jesus in Psalm 45

Psalm 45

I’m excited about this Psalm since it for me is so clear that it is about Jesus. Whenever I hear about any king in the Bible, history or the news, I know it is a reminder of my King. I like to think about and be reminded of Jesus, my king. I’m so proud to serve Him. So this Psalm points in many ways to the beauty of my King, Jesus. The writers of the Psalm seem to have felt the same way.

Main Point: Jesus is the God King.

I see three things that are further developed and revealed about Jesus the king in the Bible.

  1. God makes Jesus the ultimate King.

  2. Jesus makes the church His glorious bride

  3. Jesus makes His followers rulers with Him.

  1. God makes Jesus the ultimate King.

The trinity is not easy for us to get a grip on, and then the special nature of Jesus being 100% God and 100% man is just mind-blowing. This is why we often stumble when we try to pick out the details of power and authority in God's description of his King. Thankfully we are not alone in our struggle. This problem of understanding and describing God/Jesus’ roles and relationships has been the subject of great theological debate and clarification for millenia (Luke 20:41-44). The following verses describe Jesus as the ultimate King of kings.

[1 Timothy 6:15 NASB95] 15 which He will bring about at the proper time--He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,

[Revelation 17:14 NASB95] 14 "These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him [are the] called and chosen and faithful."

[Revelation 19:16 NASB95] 16 And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

(Matthew 11:27, 26:64, 28:18, Ephesians 1:20-21, Philippians 2:9-10, Colossians 2:10, 1 Peter 3:22, John 3:35, 17:2, 19:11, 1 Corinthians 15:24)

These verses and the ones in the brackets (I looked up and read each one) thrill my heart. I love to recognise that Jesus is the top dog, the be-all and end-all the ultimate WORD. YES! YES! YES! AMEN. I get excited about being best friends with the greatest power that has ever lived and will ever live.

I didn’t forget Psalm 45; it is full of praise and exultation of this great King we worship and adore.

Most handsome of all v.2

Gracious words stream from your lips v.2

Blessed eternally by God v.2

Mighty warrior v.3

Glorious v.3

Majestic. v.3

I don’t want to miss a detail but I realise I would just be rewriting the Psalm all over again. So do what I did and read it again and note the description of the king, your King, the King of kings.

  1. Jesus makes the church His glorious bride

For I am jealous for you with the jealousy of God himself. I promised you as a pure bride to one husband—Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:2

21 And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

22 For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. 24As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything.

25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. 27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. 28 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. 29 No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. 30 And we are members of his body.

Ephesians 5:21-29

4 So, my dear brothers and sisters, this is the point: You died to the power of the law when you died with Christ. And now you are united with the one who was raised from the dead…. Romans 7

(Revelations 21:9-10, 22:17, Galatians 4:26, John 3:29, Mark 2:19, Luke 5:34, Matthew 25:1–13)

Once again this is worthy of a much longer and deeper study, and you will miss the joy of learning and excitement of discovery if you don’t look up these verses to get a better picture of what I believe the Psalmist is depicting for you. I think all the fascination and attention that nearly all cultures and histories give to royal families and even Disney princesses are human attempts to capture the glory, excitement, worth and value of Jesus and His bride. I know all earthly examples have had some form of corruption, but our natural and intrinsic inclination to say, Wow, isn't that special and beautiful and worthy of my attention and pure and lovely, is a shadow of the real thing meant to get such attention: Jesus and His bride.

  1. Jesus makes His followers rulers with Him.

I  need to say something here about Mormons, charismatic-prosperity-false-prophets and many other false doctrines. Like Eve and the Serpent in the garden, truth and lies are closely related. The best lie is always laced with a large dose of the truth. Nonetheless, Christ’s followers will rule.

Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

Revelation 20:4

Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.

Revelation 20:6

If we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 2 Timothy 2:12

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

1 Peter 2:9

“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.” Revelation 3:21

28 Jesus replied, “I assure you that when the world is made new 19:28a Or in the regeneration. and the Son of Man sits upon his glorious throne, you who have been my followers will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.

Matthew 19:28-30

(Daniel 7:27, 1 Corinthians 6:1-20, Matthew 25:31-46)

Conclusion:

I am no less excited to write this than when I started, actually even moreso. I wish I had time to explain every reference in Psalm 45 and compare it to the verses about Jesus our king and His bride and His followers ruling. There are many connections. Maybe you can join me and share some of the revelations you have had in the Bible. May the Spirit show you Jesus in this beautiful and luxurious royal Psalm.

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 2

<-- Psalm 1   Psalm 3 --> Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed. Psalm 2:12 NLT Psalm 2   (Handwritten Psalms 2) Main Point: Jesus is the heavenly anointed King over all the earth who provides refuge from God’s wrath and the injustice of the raging nations.   God has installed a King (who is Jesus) who rules with heaven’s authority. v. 6  God’s King is in relationship with God. vv. 6 -7   God installs His King on His Holy place (mountain)  God calls His King, His Son.  God gives everything to His King and offers all He could ask for.  God gives His King heavenly authority over all the other rulers of the earth.  God’s King is a refuge against injustice and righteous judgement.  God recognises the rebellion of the earthly kings as a personal assault and will meet it with wrath. v.1,2,3  God gives the nations and rulers fair warning of his King’s authority. v.4,3, 9-12  God’s King i...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 32

I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8 NLT   Psalm 32 Have you ever heard the voice of God? People want God to speak to them, until He does. As you probably know, Lyssa and I help Christians in Belgium by serving in the Christian bookstore/coffee shop, Het Goede Boek in Leuven. Sometimes people want a red letter edition of the Bible. Other times we are asked for a Dutch language version of the King James Bible. I think both requests come from the same desire. People want to really know what God says. Today in reading and longhand copying the Bible from Psalm 32, I too got a bit excited and I thought I knew what to share about God from Psalm 32 because of a particular translation choice. When I checked my observation with several other translations in three languages, I found  a big difference.  v.8 “Le Seigneur dit : Je t'enseignerai” (NFC), “De Heer zegt: "Ik leer je” (BB), “The Lord says, “I will guide you...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 1

Psalm 2 --> But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. Psalm 1:2 NLT Psalm 1 ( Hand Written Text of Psalm 1 )  Main Point:  The law of the Lord constantly produces fruit because it is the priority and passion of the godly.   God’s law is the priority for the godly. v.1   God’s law is the passion of the godly. v.2   God’s law is fruitful in the godly. v.3   We can see the law of the Lord as pointing to the rule and reign of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the ultimate law giver of God and He rules through His Word. And His Word is from God the Father. Jesus tells us that apart from Him we can do nothing and that He is the fruit-bearing vine. The life-giving, fruit-bearing Word of God is the ultimate Law of the Lord. And Jesus told us the summation of that whole law is love for God.  So of course if we love God we will want to be with Him rather than with others; we will raise His opinions, plans and prioriti...
