Seeing Jesus in Psalm 70

 Psalm 70

MAIN POINT : Seek God with urgency (This parallels many of Jesus teachings)

God urgently help me

Psalm 70v.1

Killers have a sense of  determination and joy at the thought of closing in on the hunted person.

Psalm 70 vv.2-3

May people who  hunt for God have the same sort of determination and reaction when they close in on God.

Psalm 70v.4

David is struggling with such determination and jubilation but wants to seek God with such determination because He urgently needs God.

Psalm 70v.5

Psalm 70 is nearly an identical repeat of Psalms 40:13-17, obviously it bears repeating and  in Psalm 40 I found that being saved particularly from our own sins was the focus of Psalm 40. Could it be the same in Psalm 70, that the sin of not being determined, of not being jubilant, of not being full of faith or not trusting and rejoicing was plaguing David?

[Psa 70:1-5 NLT] 1 Please, God, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me. 2 May those who try to kill me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. 3 Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, "Aha! We've got him now!" 4 But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, "God is great!" 5 But as for me, I am poor and needy; please hurry to my aid, O God. You are my helper and my savior; O LORD, do not delay.

[Psa 40:13-17 NLT] 13 Please, LORD, rescue me! Come quickly, LORD, and help me. 14 May those who try to destroy me be humiliated and put to shame. May those who take delight in my trouble be turned back in disgrace. 15 Let them be horrified by their shame, for they said, "Aha! We've got him now!" 16 But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, "The LORD is great!" 17 As for me, since I am poor and needy, let the Lord keep me in his thoughts. You are my helper and my savior. O my God, do not delay.

I see parallels in the following three teachings of Jesus in Luke and the sentiments of Psalm 70

Luke 15 Seeking, Lost Sheep, Lost Coin, Lost Son

“search for the one that is lost until he finds it?”

Luke 15:4

“search carefully until she finds it?”

Luke 15:8

“‘Quick! Bring the finest robe…He was lost, but now he is found.’ So the party began.”

Luke 15:22,24

Luke 16 Urgency of the shrewd servant

The man replied, 'I owe him 800 gallons of olive oil.' So the manager told him, 'Take the bill and quickly change it to 400 gallons.'

Luke 16:6

Luke  17 Shouting of the leper who was healed and thankful

Luke 17:15

There are many other places that the determination of the person seeking God is compared to someone in the world who is single minded. For instance the person Jesus spoke of who buys a field because he found a treasure in it.

"The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.”

Matthew 13:44 NLT

You can imagine the person, quickly going to sell everything, and then waiting for the moment HE got his field and digging up the treasure and yelling in joy and jubilation because the investment and risk paid off and now they were set for life. Passionate, stealthy, silent, business-like, determined and then when it was finally his free and clear the celebration.

Conclusion:

So you are in great need of God. You need His salvation. Why are we not as persistent, determined, focused and jubilant as our enemies are about killing us? Don’t we need the same intensity of determination in seeking God and then the same  jubilant reaction when we are finding God?

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 2

<-- Psalm 1   Psalm 3 --> Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed. Psalm 2:12 NLT Psalm 2   (Handwritten Psalms 2) Main Point: Jesus is the heavenly anointed King over all the earth who provides refuge from God’s wrath and the injustice of the raging nations.   God has installed a King (who is Jesus) who rules with heaven’s authority. v. 6  God’s King is in relationship with God. vv. 6 -7   God installs His King on His Holy place (mountain)  God calls His King, His Son.  God gives everything to His King and offers all He could ask for.  God gives His King heavenly authority over all the other rulers of the earth.  God’s King is a refuge against injustice and righteous judgement.  God recognises the rebellion of the earthly kings as a personal assault and will meet it with wrath. v.1,2,3  God gives the nations and rulers fair warning of his King’s authority. v.4,3, 9-12  God’s King i...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 32

I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8 NLT   Psalm 32 Have you ever heard the voice of God? People want God to speak to them, until He does. As you probably know, Lyssa and I help Christians in Belgium by serving in the Christian bookstore/coffee shop, Het Goede Boek in Leuven. Sometimes people want a red letter edition of the Bible. Other times we are asked for a Dutch language version of the King James Bible. I think both requests come from the same desire. People want to really know what God says. Today in reading and longhand copying the Bible from Psalm 32, I too got a bit excited and I thought I knew what to share about God from Psalm 32 because of a particular translation choice. When I checked my observation with several other translations in three languages, I found  a big difference.  v.8 “Le Seigneur dit : Je t'enseignerai” (NFC), “De Heer zegt: "Ik leer je” (BB), “The Lord says, “I will guide you...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 1

Psalm 2 --> But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. Psalm 1:2 NLT Psalm 1 ( Hand Written Text of Psalm 1 )  Main Point:  The law of the Lord constantly produces fruit because it is the priority and passion of the godly.   God’s law is the priority for the godly. v.1   God’s law is the passion of the godly. v.2   God’s law is fruitful in the godly. v.3   We can see the law of the Lord as pointing to the rule and reign of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the ultimate law giver of God and He rules through His Word. And His Word is from God the Father. Jesus tells us that apart from Him we can do nothing and that He is the fruit-bearing vine. The life-giving, fruit-bearing Word of God is the ultimate Law of the Lord. And Jesus told us the summation of that whole law is love for God.  So of course if we love God we will want to be with Him rather than with others; we will raise His opinions, plans and prioriti...
