A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem. A psalm of David.
1 Lord, my heart is not proud;
my eyes are not haughty.
I don’t concern myself with matters too great
or too awesome for me to grasp.
2 Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself,
like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.
Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 O Israel, put your hope in the Lord—
now and always.
MAIN POINT: We can trust Jesus with our future because we have trusted Him with our past and found Him to be trustworthy.
David says he comes to the Lord in humility and simplicity. He says he is content. David tells us he has grown up enough he knows he will be cared for by the Lord. And he ends with hope. The past, the present and the future are covered by David’s hope in the Lord.
Let’s look back as David did. David tells us he is now like a weaned child. That is to say, he wasn’t always. He had to be weaned, he had to be pre-weaned. He had been a struggling, crying, demanding baby who acted as if his mother had forgotten, as if it was his first meal or his last, desperate to be fed and discontent until his crying had aroused the mother to feed him.
BUT NOW, it is not so. He has learned. He can content himself because he knows he will be fed. He is unconcerned because he instinctively understands through learning and struggling that the food will be there when he needs it. Now he is content. He has grown up and he can eat with the family at the table with his own plate. He is weaned. He knows the pattern of his family and there will be food at the proper time.
David has calmed and quieted himself. He has learned to be content. He has accepted his portion. He lives within the understanding, abilities and provision of his Father God. His soul is content.
Since we can see the relationship grow to this point of peace and contentment, we can look with David to the future and be assured that God will care for us in the coming days too. And David isn’t just content for the next need but forever.
“Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
If you are fed by God, you will learn that you can trust God to care for you. Jesus offers to wean your soul from the cares and worries of this world.
How many times and places in the Bible can you remember Jesus telling us that we need not worry because He will care for us? Matthew 7:24, John 15:10-14, Matthew 8:20, John 10:11, Luke 12:28, Matthew 6:28-30.
And so many more times than these few passages.
Conclusion:
If you give your questions, your cares and your concerns to God, He will satisfy your soul. When you have trusted Him and He has grown you up in your faith, you will become content, trusting and expectant of His care.
