Seeing Jesus in Psalm 140

 Psalm 140 (read the Psalm)

MAIN POINT: Jesus had enemies and so will you, but you can trust that in the presence of God you are safe from your enemies.

Jesus talked about loving your enemies ( burning coals on people’s heads ) and people being thrown into fire. (Matthew 3:12, 25:41, Mark 9:43-49, Luke 16:23-24, Revelation 14:10,  19:20, 20:10, 20:14-15, 21:8)

And Jesus definitely had enemies. There were people trying to kill Jesus, and Satan wasn’t leaving any space for his rampage of kill, steal and destroy campaign to pass Jesus by. David has his share of enemies too. It should be no surprise to you that both Jesus and David were people often on the run, aware of the danger that lurked in every location and word of their enemies' presence.

Jesus uses the words of verse 3 to describe the people whom everyone assumed should be closest to God.

Have you felt like evil people and evil forces are gunning for your soul? David understood that feeling and even more, Jesus understands that situation better than anyone. You can join the “I-want-to-be-godly-but-evil-forces-are-after-me-club”; it is an old and very respected club with very famous members. Consider Peter.

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat;

Luke 22:31 NASB

Don’t think for a moment that the story about Job is an isolated special incident. (John 15:20, Luke 6:40)

No, indeed we are warned many times in the letters from the apostles that we are in a spiritual battle and that our enemy isn't simply the people we see. So although you may easily read verse 7 as being a literal battle on a field with swords, spears and bow, David knew that there was a battle raging for the honour of the Lord. And Jesus was more acutely aware of this than anyone ever has been.

The question is, where then is there safety? And the answer is the same for Jesus, David, me and you.

In the presence of the Lord.

Conclusion:

Be comforted and rest assured you are safe in the presence of God who knows how to deal with your enemies.

Handwritten Psalm 140
Handwritten Psalm 140

For the choir director: A psalm of David.

1 O Lord, rescue me from evil people.

Protect me from those who are violent,

2 those who plot evil in their hearts

and stir up trouble all day long.

3 Their tongues sting like a snake;

the venom of a viper drips from their lips.

Interlude

4 O Lord, keep me out of the hands of the wicked.

Protect me from those who are violent,

for they are plotting against me.

5 The proud have set a trap to catch me;

they have stretched out a net;

they have placed traps all along the way.

Interlude

6 I said to the Lord, “You are my God!”

Listen, O Lord, to my cries for mercy!

7 O Sovereign Lord, the strong one who rescued me,

you protected me on the day of battle.

8 Lord, do not let evil people have their way.

Do not let their evil schemes succeed,

or they will become proud.

Interlude

9 Let my enemies be destroyed

by the very evil they have planned for me.

10 Let burning coals fall down on their heads.

Let them be thrown into the fire

or into watery pits from which they can’t escape.

11 Don’t let liars prosper here in our land.

Cause great disasters to fall on the violent.

12 But I know the Lord will help those they persecute;

he will give justice to the poor.

13 Surely righteous people are praising your name;

the godly will live in your presence.

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 2

<-- Psalm 1   Psalm 3 --> Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed. Psalm 2:12 NLT Psalm 2   (Handwritten Psalms 2) Main Point: Jesus is the heavenly anointed King over all the earth who provides refuge from God’s wrath and the injustice of the raging nations.   God has installed a King (who is Jesus) who rules with heaven’s authority. v. 6  God’s King is in relationship with God. vv. 6 -7   God installs His King on His Holy place (mountain)  God calls His King, His Son.  God gives everything to His King and offers all He could ask for.  God gives His King heavenly authority over all the other rulers of the earth.  God’s King is a refuge against injustice and righteous judgement.  God recognises the rebellion of the earthly kings as a personal assault and will meet it with wrath. v.1,2,3  God gives the nations and rulers fair warning of his King’s authority. v.4,3, 9-12  God’s King i...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 32

I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8 NLT   Psalm 32 Have you ever heard the voice of God? People want God to speak to them, until He does. As you probably know, Lyssa and I help Christians in Belgium by serving in the Christian bookstore/coffee shop, Het Goede Boek in Leuven. Sometimes people want a red letter edition of the Bible. Other times we are asked for a Dutch language version of the King James Bible. I think both requests come from the same desire. People want to really know what God says. Today in reading and longhand copying the Bible from Psalm 32, I too got a bit excited and I thought I knew what to share about God from Psalm 32 because of a particular translation choice. When I checked my observation with several other translations in three languages, I found  a big difference.  v.8 “Le Seigneur dit : Je t'enseignerai” (NFC), “De Heer zegt: "Ik leer je” (BB), “The Lord says, “I will guide you...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 1

Psalm 2 --> But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. Psalm 1:2 NLT Psalm 1 ( Hand Written Text of Psalm 1 )  Main Point:  The law of the Lord constantly produces fruit because it is the priority and passion of the godly.   God’s law is the priority for the godly. v.1   God’s law is the passion of the godly. v.2   God’s law is fruitful in the godly. v.3   We can see the law of the Lord as pointing to the rule and reign of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the ultimate law giver of God and He rules through His Word. And His Word is from God the Father. Jesus tells us that apart from Him we can do nothing and that He is the fruit-bearing vine. The life-giving, fruit-bearing Word of God is the ultimate Law of the Lord. And Jesus told us the summation of that whole law is love for God.  So of course if we love God we will want to be with Him rather than with others; we will raise His opinions, plans and prioriti...
