Seeing Jesus in Psalm 31

But I am trusting in you, O LORD, saying, ‘You are my God!’ My future is in your hands. Psalm 31:14-15 NLT   Psalm 31 I see at least 4 parallel situations or statements between Psalm 31 and Jesus' death on the cross. v.5 Into Your hand I commit my spirit; Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last. Luke 23:46 v.10 I am dying from grief; my years are shortened by sadness. He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Matthew 26:38 v.18 Silence their lying lips—those proud and arrogant lips that accuse the godly. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself! So he is the King of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross right now, and we will believe in him! Matthew 27:42 v.22 In panic I cried out, “I am cut off from the Lord!” Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my G...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 30

Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning. Psalm 30:5 NLT   Psalm 30 In this Psalm I see a tension and a contrast. I believe it to be the tension and contrast that is present through all the Bible, and today I thought first of Paul. “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Philippians 1:21 cf. “...Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your faithfulness?” v.9 & “O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever.” v.12 Our current concept of life after death is not nearly as developed as we imagine it is. When pressed to describe most aspects of death, dying, resurrection and eternal life, we are left with vague and often contradictory ideas. In the time of David it was even less clear because Jesus had not yet risen from the dead and the revelations that have come through Jesus and the apostles had not yet enlightened the minds of God's children. “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will k...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 29

The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic.  Psalm 29:4 NLT   Psalm 29 This morning after copying Psalm 29 out of the New Living Translation I took the time to read the chapter from each of the following bible versions and  to read the accompanying notes or alternative texts. I recommend you consider doing the same sometimes when studying a particular passage.  Herziene Statenvertaling NBG-vertaling 1951 BasisBijbel English Standard Version The Passion Translation Wycliffe’s Bible with Modern Spelling King James Version The Message Douay-Rheims Challoner Revision 1752 Darby's Translation 1890 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition New American Standard Bible 1995 La Bible du Semeur Segond 21 MAIN POINT: The mere voice of the Lord is awesome with indescribable power that gives His children strength and peace. God’s voice is worthy of honour All powers, including angels, are invited to honour God. Even just the name of God is awesome and worthy of...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 28

The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. Psalm 28:7 NLT   Psalm 28 Justice is deeply important, and I do not think David is wrong at all for his feelings and his request to the Lord in v.4, “Requite them according to their work and according to the evil of their practices; Requite them according to the deeds of their hands; Repay them their recompense .” But I am reminded that if we are to be like Jesus, we must go further: we must love mercy and forgiveness. We must love and pray for our enemies. As I read this Psalm, I am reminded of Jesus who calls us to an even higher standard than seeking justice for our own revenge. Luke 6:27-31 ( Matthew 5:44 ) “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold y...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 27

Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close. Psalm 27:10 NLT   Psalm 27 The feelings of insecurity are not sin. Such fears lead us to need God more. These inevitable niggling doubts cause us to consider the character of God. Although David knows who God is, he still faces significant struggles and obstacles in his life, and these even erode the confidence He has in God. His faith is tested so he explores his priorities and his allegiances and concludes that when all is said and done, he has only one desire. And that is to be in the presence of God where he will meditate on the character of God. No other relationship, not even his parents, is as important to him.  Mark 3: 20-21,31-35 20 One time Jesus entered a house, and the crowds began to gather again. Soon he and his disciples couldn’t even find time to eat. 21 When his family heard what was happening, they tried to take him away. “He’s out of his mind,” they said. 31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 26

Don’t let me suffer the fate of sinners. Don’t condemn me along with murderers. Psalm 26:9 NLT   Psalm 26 v.9 Don’t let me suffer the fate of sinners. Don’t condemn me along with murderers. Mark 15:7 , The man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. Mark 15:28 [And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”] Luke 23:19 , (He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection made in the city, and for murder.) Matthew 27:38 , At that time two robbers *were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. Luke 23:39 One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!”  Isaiah Chapter 53:12 cf. Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Hims...
