Seeing Jesus in Psalm 6

The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord will answer my prayer.

Psalm 6:9 NLT

Psalm 6

Today is the first day of a family vacation with my youngest daughter and her husband, Ben and Bethany and our four grandchildren.

Today I am reading Psalm 6. I often have felt like the David in Psalm 6.

I don’t know when David wrote this Psalm. Maybe you could try to remember some of the  difficult moments in David’s life. Maybe you could think about how you would feel in a moment like that.

Opa William is reading a Psalm everyday for 150 days. He started August 1 and He will end this challenge December 29.

I am looking for how God is revealing Jesus to us through the book of Psalms. Everyday I am looking for a lesson to teach my own heart how to see Jesus. Today as I read Psalm 6 I discovered the main point for my heart today.

Main Point: It is okay to feel really bad if we tell God and ask Him to help us.

David and Jesus show us how to talk to God when we are really sad. (Psalm 6 and Mark 14:32-42)

Read: Psalm 6

For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be accompanied by an eight-stringed instrument.

1 O Lord, don’t rebuke me in your anger

or discipline me in your rage.

2 Have compassion on me, Lord, for I am weak.

Heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony.

3 I am sick at heart.

How long, O Lord, until you restore me?

4 Return, O Lord, and rescue me.

Save me because of your unfailing love.

5 For the dead do not remember you.

Who can praise you from the grave?

6 I am worn out from sobbing.

All night I flood my bed with weeping,

drenching it with my tears.

7 My vision is blurred by grief;

my eyes are worn out because of all my enemies.

8 Go away, all you who do evil,

for the Lord has heard my weeping.

9 The Lord has heard my plea;

the Lord will answer my prayer.

10 May all my enemies be disgraced and terrified.

May they suddenly turn back in shame.

Have you ever thought things couldn't get much worse? It sounds like David felt that way when he wrote this Psalm. How do we know that David is very sad? What things does David tell us that let us know he is very very sad?

v.1

He thinks God might be angry.

He thinks God might discipline him.

He thinks God might have rage. (What is rage?)

v. 4

He thinks God might have left him.

v. 5

He thinks God might let him die.

v. 6 -7

He has been crying a lot. (How do we know David was crying a lot?)

v. 7-8, 10

He is worried about his enemies. (How do we know David was worried about his enemies?)

David is sad and crying a lot because he thinks God is mad at him for being disobedient and he is afraid God will let Him die or that God will let his enemies hurt him or make fun of him.

David might have done something disobedient. v. 1

David had enemies. v. 10

But David is still talking to God. David is not running away or hiding from God.

David knows God is good. David isn’t afraid to ask God for help. What kind of help does David ask for?

Don’t rebuke me when you are angry. v.1

Don’t discipline me in rage.

Have compassion on me. v.2

Restore me. v.3

Return, O Lord v.4

Save me

The Lord has heard (x2) v.8&9

The Lord will answer v.9

This is just like Jesus praying in the garden with His friends before Judas betrayed him.

(Mark 14:32-42)

Even when you are very very sad you can be sure God hears you and answers your prayer.

The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord accepts my prayer.

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 2

<-- Psalm 1   Psalm 3 --> Submit to God’s royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed. Psalm 2:12 NLT Psalm 2   (Handwritten Psalms 2) Main Point: Jesus is the heavenly anointed King over all the earth who provides refuge from God’s wrath and the injustice of the raging nations.   God has installed a King (who is Jesus) who rules with heaven’s authority. v. 6  God’s King is in relationship with God. vv. 6 -7   God installs His King on His Holy place (mountain)  God calls His King, His Son.  God gives everything to His King and offers all He could ask for.  God gives His King heavenly authority over all the other rulers of the earth.  God’s King is a refuge against injustice and righteous judgement.  God recognises the rebellion of the earthly kings as a personal assault and will meet it with wrath. v.1,2,3  God gives the nations and rulers fair warning of his King’s authority. v.4,3, 9-12  God’s King i...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 32

I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Psalm 32:8 NLT   Psalm 32 Have you ever heard the voice of God? People want God to speak to them, until He does. As you probably know, Lyssa and I help Christians in Belgium by serving in the Christian bookstore/coffee shop, Het Goede Boek in Leuven. Sometimes people want a red letter edition of the Bible. Other times we are asked for a Dutch language version of the King James Bible. I think both requests come from the same desire. People want to really know what God says. Today in reading and longhand copying the Bible from Psalm 32, I too got a bit excited and I thought I knew what to share about God from Psalm 32 because of a particular translation choice. When I checked my observation with several other translations in three languages, I found  a big difference.  v.8 “Le Seigneur dit : Je t'enseignerai” (NFC), “De Heer zegt: "Ik leer je” (BB), “The Lord says, “I will guide you...

Seeing Jesus in Psalm 1

Psalm 2 --> But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. Psalm 1:2 NLT Psalm 1 ( Hand Written Text of Psalm 1 )  Main Point:  The law of the Lord constantly produces fruit because it is the priority and passion of the godly.   God’s law is the priority for the godly. v.1   God’s law is the passion of the godly. v.2   God’s law is fruitful in the godly. v.3   We can see the law of the Lord as pointing to the rule and reign of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the ultimate law giver of God and He rules through His Word. And His Word is from God the Father. Jesus tells us that apart from Him we can do nothing and that He is the fruit-bearing vine. The life-giving, fruit-bearing Word of God is the ultimate Law of the Lord. And Jesus told us the summation of that whole law is love for God.  So of course if we love God we will want to be with Him rather than with others; we will raise His opinions, plans and prioriti...
